Salmo platycephalus

Salmo platycephalus

Salmo platycephalus is a salmonid in the family Salmonidae (order Salmoniformes), recorded as Endangered.

Status
Endangered
Scientific name
Salmo platycephalus
Taxonomy
Salmoniformes · Salmonidae · Salmo

Appearance

Genetic evidence suggests that the flathead trout may indeed be derived from introduced brown trout (Salmo trutta) and thus not be a distinct species of its own.

Range and habitat

It is endemic to southeastern Turkey. It is known only from one population, that occupies three streams, tributaries of the Zamantı River in the Seyhan River basin. The population itself is abundant, but subject to threat by habitat loss, since the range is small.

Pins are Wikidata “endemic to” fields. Orange dots, when present, are GBIF occurrence tiles — survey bias included.

Diet

Salmonids need cold, oxygenated water and a clean gravel or open-lake feeding ground. Endemic whitefishes collapse when the lake is eutrophied or fished out.

In crisis

Also, predation of juveniles by introduced rainbow trout may cause population decline. The species is classified as critically endangered.

Salmo platycephalus is Endangered on this catalog because that is the IUCN category stored on Wikidata. Confirm the official criteria and any later count on iucnredlist.org.
