Is it legal to own a capybara?

Even where ownership is fully legal, capybaras have real care requirements that most exotic pet impulse buyers underestimate: they're herd animals that do poorly alone, need access to a large body of water for swimming, and can live 8 to 10 years, sometimes longer in captivity.
