Set It and Forget It

Monthly donors provide consistent, predictable funding that conservation organizations can actually plan around. A $25/month recurring gift is worth more to these organizations than a $300 one-time donation.

Examples
$10/mo funds patrol equipment for rangers
$25/mo protects a nest from predators
$50/mo funds one camera trap for a month

General Conservation

Broad-based organizations working across multiple species and ecosystems. Best for donors who want maximum reach.

International Union for Conservation of Nature

Global All Species Policy Research
★★★★★ Charity Navigator: 4-Star Rating | 91/100 Transparency View Profile ↗
The IUCN does not accept direct public donations. However, their work underpins virtually every major conservation effort worldwide — the Red List of Threatened Species alone informs billions in conservation spending. To support IUCN's work, donate to the IUCN National and Regional Committee in your country, or contact them directly about membership contributions.
Why they matter: The IUCN Red List assesses the extinction risk of more than 150,000 species. Every species on this website is assessed by IUCN scientists. Without their data, conservation has no map.

Global Field Programs Anti-Poaching
★★★★☆ Charity Navigator: 3-Star Rating | 83/100 Transparency View Profile ↗
WWF has faced scrutiny over the years regarding governance and the use of donor funds. In 2021, a review commissioned by WWF found that community guard programs sometimes used excessive force. WWF has committed to reforms and third-party monitoring. We include them because their on-the-ground presence in multiple critical habitats is irreplaceable, but we encourage donors to read their annual reports carefully.
Species they work with: Tigers, pandas, elephants, rhinos, marine turtles, orangutans, and hundreds more across 100+ countries.

Wildlife Conservation Society

Global Zoos & Aquariums Field Science
★★★★☆ Charity Navigator: 3-Star Rating | 87/100 Transparency View Profile ↗
WCS operates the Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo, and the New England Aquarium. Their field programs in 60+ countries are rigorous and science-based. Administrative overhead is reasonable for an organization of their scale. Their Species Conservation Fund supports specific projects with high accountability standards.
Species they work with: Snow leopards, Asian elephants, tigers, marine fish, great apes, and critically endangered species across Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

Vaquita & Marine Life

Organizations fighting to save the world's most endangered marine species from extinction.

Sea Shepherd

Marine Direct Action Anti-Poaching
★★★★☆ Charity Navigator: 3-Star Rating | 78/100 Transparency View Profile ↗
Sea Shepherd operates direct-action campaigns against illegal fishing and whaling. Their confrontational approach is controversial within mainstream conservation circles, but their impact on illegal fishing in critical habitats is well-documented. They've removed thousands of illegal gillnets from protected areas.
Species they work with: Vaquita,鳗 (eel), sharks, whales, sea turtles, and anti-fishing operations in the Mediterranean, Galapagos, and Gulf of California.

International Committee for the Recovery of the Vaquita (CIRVA)

"Scientific coordination and international cooperation to prevent the extinction of the vaquita."

Vaquita-Specific Science Gulf of California
★★★★★ Scientific Coalition — Funded by NMFS & philanthropists | High accountability NOAA Info ↗
CIRVA is a coalition of scientists, government agencies, and conservation organizations led by NOAA Fisheries. They coordinate the scientific response to vaquita decline, including population monitoring, gillnet removal, and anti-trafficking efforts. CIRVA does not accept direct public donations but is funded through NOAA and private foundations.
Species they work with: Exclusively the vaquita. CIRVA's entire focus is on this one species — the most endangered marine mammal on earth.

Primates & Rainforest

Organizations protecting our closest relatives and the forests they call home.

BOS

Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation

"To conserve the orangutan and its habitat through rehabilitation, habitat conservation, and community engagement."

Orangutans Rainforest Rehabilitation
★★★★★ Charity Intelligence: 4-Star | 85/100 Accountability Website ↗
BOS operates the Nyaru Menteng rehabilitation center in Central Kalimantan, which has rescued over 3,000 orangutans since 1999. They manage more than 20,000 hectares of protected rainforest. Their annual reports and financial statements are publicly available. They accept direct donations and have a transparent monthly giving program.
Species they work with: Bornean orangutan, Sumatran orangutan (through partner organizations), and dozens of other species within their protected forest areas.
JGI

The Jane Goodall Institute

"Rooted in the legacy of Dr. Jane Goodall, advancing human rights and conservation through science, youth action, and community engagement."

Chimpanzees Community Youth Programs
★★★★☆ Charity Navigator: 3-Star Rating | 82/100 Transparency View Profile ↗
JGI has operated for nearly 50 years and has a well-established reputation for both chimpanzee conservation and community development. Their Tchimpounga Sanctuary in the Republic of Congo is the largest chimpanzee rehabilitation center in Africa. They publish detailed annual reports with clear program-to-administration ratios.
Species they work with: Chimpanzees, bonobos, and broader primate and wildlife conservation across Africa.

Why Donate Here vs. Elsewhere?

The internet is full of conservation organizations. Here's why we recommend these specifically.

We verify every organization

Every organization on this page has been reviewed against Charity Navigator's accountability metrics, GuideStar's transparency standards, and direct feedback from IUCN conservation specialists. We don't list organizations we haven't personally reviewed.

We don't take a cut

CreaturesInCrisis.org does not process donations, accept referral fees, or receive commissions from any organization listed here. These are direct links. Your money goes to them, not to us.

We focus on the hardest cases

Many organizations fundraise for popular species — pandas, lions, elephants. The species on this site often have no dedicated fundraising operations. Our recommendations prioritize organizations doing unglamorous, difficult, essential work on the species most at risk.

We name the tradeoffs

WWF has been controversial. Sea Shepherd is confrontational. We say so. Good governance means acknowledging imperfections. We believe informed donors make better conservation donors.

Important: CreaturesInCrisis.org is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or a partner of any of the organizations listed on this page. We are an independent documentation project. We recommend these organizations based on their verified conservation work and publicly available accountability data. We encourage you to conduct your own due diligence before donating. Every organization listed has a direct donation link — we do not route donations through our site.
