Sarah Rector (born c. 1902) was an African-American girl who, at the age of 11, became one of the richest people in the United States after receiving a large land grant in Oklahoma following the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889. She was popularly known as “Queen of the Negroes” and inspired the character of “Mistress Mercer” in the 1948 movie In the Heat of the Night.
Rector was born in Kansas, the daughter of sharecroppers. In 1889, her family moved to Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) in order to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Land Run. Rector’s parents each claimed a 160-acre (65-hectare) lot, and Rector herself was later given an additional 80 acres (32 hectares).
TheRectors’ land was situated in an area that became known as the “Black Wall Street” of Tulsa, Oklahoma. This was a prosperous African-American community, and Sarah Rector’s family became wealthy through leasing their land to black-owned businesses.
Rector’s wealth attracted much attention, both positive and negative. She was popularly known as the “Queen of the Negroes”, and her wealth made her a target for kidnappers. In 1913, Rector was kidnapped by two white men, but she was quickly found and returned to her family unharmed.
The popularity of In the Heat of the Night, a 1967 film starring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger, helped to keep Rector’s story alive. Rector was the inspiration for the character of “Mistress Mercer”, a wealthy African-American woman who is kidnapped and held for ransom.
Rector died in Oklahoma in 1966, at the age of 64. She is buried in an unmarked grave in Tulsa’s Memorial Park Cemetery.
